I started this painting in 2001 but got sidetracked by other projects and never got back to it. Back then, I had a strict policy of only working plein air on these outside paintings. Still, I began in 2002 to take compositional pictures because the owners of the junkyard I was working in had suggested they might be crushing all these incredibly interesting vehicles soon.

By the time I was able to get back to this painting, all the Volkswagens in the place had been hauled off and crushed into cubes, and shortly afterward the junkyard itself closed down.

Nine years later, I had a request from the Utah Arts Council for a winter themed painting, and I decided to dust this one off and finish it.
