Painting Wild Things Brad Slaugh chickens The Thing orange
Wild Things
Oil on Panel
24" x 20"
2012

This painting started out as a simple plein air painting and developed into a narrative about the tame and the wild. I wasn't sure where it was going until the very end when I added the chickens and the balloon, which at the time I painted this were both fairly regular sights in my backyard, as was (with great regularity at the time) a naked feral child in the form of my 3 year old daughter, who served as model for this painting. This is not my yard, however. Also the girl driving the VW Thing is a quote from Delacroix's Orphan Girl at the Cemetery (feel like I'm giving a bit of the joke away there - still, it seemed like you needed a nudge). That black chicken is a big sucker.
