I started this painting as a simple plein air painting and after living with it for a while felt that something was missing, so I added the man and the dog based on a couple of drawings I had hanging around on the walls of my studio. This was the first painting that started to feel like it crossed over from a direct observational approach to a more narrative studio one. I've used both the man and the dog in more than one painting over the years.
