This was painted straight from life as my friends Charley and Brian played speed chess in Helper, UT every day for the summer of 1999. Even though these guys wouldn't hold still for a second I think I got them for the most part, as well as the interior/exterior light interplay. The only thing I added was the probably too tall fellow in the background, which I made up from a pencil drawing in my studio.
