This is a large scale painting based on the Portinari Altarpiece By Hugo Van der Goes, a painting I saw in the Uffizi as a young man and which made an impression on me.

I painted this in my second year of graduate school at Boston University, from about a hundred or so photographs I had taken at a family reunion in Tropic, Utah. I think I was perhaps a bit homesick for the West.

It was purchased over a decade later by Salt Lake County and can be seen anytime in the Salt Lake County Complex South Building, hanging above the mezzanine.
