Narratives
This is the first of a series of paintings based overtly on the religious paintings of the European Renaissance. I've been slipping quotations of heads, figures and even compositions from el Greco, Caravaggio, van der Goes and others into my works for years, and here I'm just taking this bad habit to its natural conclusion.
I love the balletic passion of these paintings and enjoy inserting the rather improbable conceits behind them into a banal modern American context.
Plus, it's not a proper saint painting without a moldy old skull kicking around the yard.
